Fast pyrolysis of hydrolysis lignin was studied in fluidized bed units. Hydrolysis lignin, a bioproduct from the lignocellulosic ethanol production process (St1 Cellunolix), processed bench scale bubbling (BFB) and pilot circulating (CFB) Utilization steam as hydrogen sources tested BFB unit. Major technical challenges identified were related to slow reaction rates degradation rapid secondary reactions vapor phase resulting deposit formation pressure buildup product gas lines. The carbohydrate content had clear correlation its processability. More with clogging agglomeration observed feedstock having lower content. unit overcome by adding rapidly rotating mixer reactor break agglomerates. With CFB unit, not problem, due high velocities forces applied sand particles. In screw feeder cooled no significant melting problems observed. avoided feeding raw material cold section reactor. However, severe increases both Steam tested, separately, provide excess system. Based on analyses added into system, but ended up mostly phase. To enhance transfer organic liquid, catalyst active is probably needed.
